Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a medical procedure that precisely removes dead skin cells, layer by layer, therefore expediting the natural process of epidermal regeneration. The final result is an improvement in the skin’s elasticity and clarity. Microdermabrasion is a controlled, physical method of exfoliation that can treat many types of skin conditions. For microdermabrasion treatments, I utilize a machine that has adjustable settings to treat individual skin type needs. I glide a rounded cosmetic tool over the skin. There are two openings within this hand piece. One jets a stream of fine sand-like crystals that polish and buff the epidermis of the skin. The other opening vacuums the crystals and the dead skin cells into a closed container. This procedure can be used on areas of the body other than the face.
The microdermabrasion and full facial procedure includes a deep cleaning, toning, microdermabrasion, extractions ( if needed), a soothing mask, scalp massage, moisturizing and sun block application. This takes 50 to 60 minutes. At least six treatments spaced 10-14 days apart are recommended. However, this number varies due to the wide variety of skin conditions.
Chemical Peel
A chemical peel is a medical procedure that can be used as an alternative to microdermabrasion or in combination for more aggressive treatments. The purpose is to penetrate and remove the top layers of the skin therefore removing the dead skin cells and allowing new cells to appear.
I use pure non-neutralized glycolic acid in my chemical peel treatments in strengths of 30-40 percent. Glycolic acid has the smallest molecular size of all the alpha-hydroxy acids, therefore allowing easier penetration.
Chemical peel treatments include a full facial and utilize the same steps as microdermabrasion, but the glycolic acid takes the place of the microdermabrasion. When used in combination with microdermabrasion, the glycolic acid is applied after the gel mask. Combination treatments are recommended for patients with deeper wrinkles, deeper acne scarring or deeper hyper pigmentation.
The entire procedure lasts 45-60 minutes. Two peels per month for ten months is recommended for the average patient. This number may vary because as always the patient’s skin condition is the determining factor.
